Production on Wonder Woman is well underway. Currently, the superhero standalone is shooting in Europe, across the UK and Italy to be precise, and will without a shadow of a doubt be taking place around World War I. The tale of Diana Prince has attracted a plethora of big-name talent to round out the supporting cast so far, and today brings news of one more.

At long last, the role of Wonder Woman’s mother Queen Hippolyta has been filled. Despite many rumors linking a number of other A-listers with the role of the Amazon queen, Danish actress Connie Nielsen has snagged the coveted part. Nicole Kidman was originally attached to play the mother figure, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. Nielsen has dabbled in practically every genre across her decades of film work, with highlights including The Devil’s Advocate, Gladiator, and a recent recurring role on TV’s The Good Wife, so she’s certainly a sound choice.

What’s most telling about today’s scoop is what’s not mentioned. Now that Nielsen’s attached to play Diana’s mother, this – by default – knocks Robin Wright out of the running for that matriarchal role. Warner Bros. has remained tight-lipped on the topic, refusing to budge or even hint at who the House of Cards star might be playing. Might they try and keep her character a secret until the movie opens?

Co-starring Chris Pine, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, and Ewen Bremner, Wonder Woman hits theatres on on June 23, 2017.
