Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil) will be re-teaming with Constantin Film and Summit Entertainment to bring us the period disaster film Pompeii. They previously teamed up for an upcoming 3D version of Dumas’s The Three Musketeers which stars Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Luke Evans and Madds Mikkelsen. So far, no actors have been cast for Pompeii, nor has a start date been set.
The film, which has been written by Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler (two of the co-writers on Batman Forever), “will center around the romance between a slave and the daughter of the slave’s master amid the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and destruction of Pompeii.”
Merely four years ago, there was an attempt by producers Roman Polanski and Robert Benmussa to bring a $100 million film about Pompeii to the screen, but due to location problems, script problems, and fear of a possible Screen Actors Guild strike, the picture never got off the ground.
Anderson will be directing and co-producing. Constantin will finance and produce with Summit distributing domestically as well as selling foreign markets at Cannes.
