We weren’t too impressed by the red band trailer for Fox’s summer comedy Let’s Be Cops, finding that there were a few funny gags but nothing truly hilarious that would mark the film as one to see. Unfortunately, the new green band trailer just takes the content of the raunchier preview and tones it down. In other words, it’s not doing anything to change our minds.
Still, if you’re interested in the comedy, and you’ve already seen the red band trailer, you still might get a few chuckles out of the tamer version. Check it out below:
With a cast led by New Girl‘s Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., and support including The Vampire Diaries‘ Nina Dobrev and Key & Peele‘s Keegan Michael-Key, Let’s Be Cops should play well to teen audiences, regardless of its hard-R rating (which its stars have promised will include over-the-top comedy, nudity and action). As far as plot is concerned, it appears that Let’s Be Cops will follow in the footsteps of successful action-comedies like 21 Jump Street and Ride Along, though the trailers haven’t shown us that it will really add anything to that subgenre.
It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real-life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.
Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) directs and the cast also includes Rob Riggle, Andy Garcia and James D’Arcy. Greenfield wrote the script with Nicolas Thomas (Canoga Park), so it’s unclear whether the writing will be sharp and funny enough to please more than the least-demanding filmgoers. If nothing else, the film should supply some funny sight gags and enjoyable banter between its two leads.
We’ll find out what Greenfield and Thomas have up their sleeves when Let’s Be Cops opens on August 13th.
