Australian director John Hillcoat doesn’t step behind the lens too often, but when he does, it’s worth standing up and taking notice. As the filmmaker behind The Proposition, a big-screen rendition of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and the star-studded Lawless, Hillcoat has established an impressive body of work over the past decade or so, and he’ll be hoping that soon-to-be-released heist thriller Triple 9 adds another feather to his cap.
Orbiting around a tight-knit crew of cops who won’t hesitate to get their hands dirty, the moniker Triple 9 is actually police code for ‘officer down,’ and that’s exactly the stunt the corrupt law enforcers set out to stage in order to pull off a seemingly impossible heist. Wedged in between a rock and a hard place, today’s rip-roaring new trailer showcases the involvement of the Russian mob, with some of the most powerful and dangerous players eager to blackmail the crew of cops in order to establish dominance on the streets.
At the core of Triple 9 is Casey Affleck’s Chris Allen, the rookie cop who is essentially being utilized as a decoy on one side of the city while the remainder of the crew exercise the bank heist on the other. But as one would expect, Allen surviving the deceitful ploy soon throws a spanner in the works. Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Gal Gadot, Teresa Palmer and Clifton Collins, Jr complete the impressive ensemble.
Open Road Films’ Triple 9 will rappel into theaters on February 19, 2016.
In TRIPLE NINE, a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist and the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down.” Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck action-packed finale tangled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.
