“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one with the Force. We know this because Alec Guinness’ wise old Jedi still managed to guide Luke Skywalker through Dagobah, despite falling at the hands of Darth Vader during A New Hope. Fast forward to the current Star Wars trilogy, and we’re now hearing that Obi-Wan’s Force ghost may manifest at some point during The Last Jedi, in which the Resistance turns to Rey, another Force-sensitive being with Jedi powers, to topple the First Order. No pressure, then.
However, it seems she won’t do so alone. As you’ll no doubt remember, Obi-Wan was heard briefly during The Force Awakens, when Luke’s long-lost lightsaber triggered a Force vision in the unsuspecting Rey. What followed was a series of vivid and often nightmarish scenes, followed by the line, “Rey, these are your first steps.” And online theorist Mike Zeroh (via The Express) believes that’s rather telling.
Why did they insert Obi-Wan Kenobi’s voice in during post-production? Well, they may have come up with a really interesting storyline for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In [Rey’s Force back vision] sequence, we do hear Obi-Wan Kenobi saying, ‘Rey, these are your first steps.’ I don’t necessarily think Obi-Wan was speaking to Rey at the moment of the vision. I honestly do believe that when he says, ‘These are your first steps’…it is a parallel to the Star Wars: A New Hope sequence when Obi-Wan tells Luke, ‘That’s good, you’ve taken your first steps into a larger world.’
This theory, which is one of many to come from Zeroh, really kicks up a gear when the online sleuth suggests Rey will hear those words of wisdom again during Star Wars: The Last Jedi – likely aboard Achh-To, where Luke Skywalker reluctantly schools Daisy Ridley’s heroine on the inner workings of the Force.
Zeroh continues:
I think that when Obi-Wan is telling this to Rey, it’s actually a Force ghost voice of [him] talking to Rey in the future…at some point in The Last Jedi. Rey [will] eventually hear a voice either in one of the caves or in the sequences where she’s underwater and goes to another hidden cave. The reason I do believe that is because we have heard that Yoda’s Force ghost is returning…in physical form. We also heard many rumors and leaks out there that Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Force ghost returns to a degree, but only by voice apparently.
A compelling theory? Or complete hogwash? You can, as always, drop your own thoughts via the comments section and remember, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now only a month away.
