In a very, very short space of time, the indie production house known as A24 has become something of a hallmark of quality in the horror/thriller genre. Since planting its roots in 2012, the studio has helped foster a steady stream of critical darlings in the vein of The Witch, Moonlight, Green Room and the wonderfully irreverent Swiss Army Man.
Granted, they don’t all fit squarely into Hollywood’s horror genre, but next week, A24 is poised to unleash a dose of nightmare fuel in the form of It Comes at Night, and Bloody Disgusting has relayed the latest, and downright chilling batch of photos for us to peruse. Embedded below, you’ll be able to locate the likes of Joel Edgerton, Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience) and Carmen Ejogo coming to terms with a supernatural (?) horror.
Also, what on Earth is going on in that last photo? Is she purposely spilling blood into his mouth? Whatever the case, it’s sinister as all hell. And if you’re gunning to take another peek at Trey Edward Shults’ sophomore effort in motion, the second and suitably horrifying trailer can be found up above.
Evil stalks the woodland, and though A24 has engineered its marketing campaign with care and craft, thereby mitigating the chance of spoiling the story of It Comes at Night – including the exact identity of ‘it’ – ahead of time, the film’s official synopsis does offer up some clues as to what to expect.
Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.
It Comes at Night, apparently, so you’d best keep the lights on. A24 and Trey Edward Shults’ budding horror flick, one that has already evoked comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Get Out, will be with us on June 9th, and ought to give moviegoers an exciting alternative to The Mummy.
