David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method and Roman Polanski’s Carnage have been added to the already impressive line up of the Venice Film Festival beginning August 31st according to the Guardian. The news follows on the heels of the announcement that George Clooney‘s latest directorial effort, The Ides of March starring Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and Clooney himself, will open the festival.
A Dangerous Method is David Cronenberg‘s first film since the well received 2007 Russian mob thriller Eastern Promises. The film also marks Cronenberg’s third teaming with actor Viggo Mortensen who plays Sigmund Freud in the film. A Dangerous Method is a dramatic examination of Freud’s relationship with fellow innovator Carl Jung played by X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender. Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassell co-star.
Carnage was adapted by Yamina Reza from her play God of Carnage. The film stars Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Walz in the story of two couples who get together after their sons have a fight at school. Carnage follows up Polanski’s well reviewed 2010 thriller The Ghost Writer starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.
Sony Pictures Classic is distributing both A Dangerous Method and Carnage in the United States. The company has yet to set a release Date for A Dangerous Method while Carnage is getting a prime release date in the thick of the Awards season on November 18th, 2011.
