Cast your mind back to the formative years of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, before the film’s official title was even unveiled, and you’ll likely recall the level of secrecy that Disney maintained for J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival. Everything from plot details to individual character names were on strict lockdown, and even to this day, fans still don’t know the true identity of FN-2187 Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Online chatter would have you believe that Finn is actually the son of smooth-talking smuggler Lando Calrissian, but the jury’s still out regarding Ridley’s Force-sensitive heroine. Will we discover Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: Episode VIII? Honestly, we still don’t know for sure, but Daisy Ridley continues to drop hints that the sequel will herald the answers we so crave.

During an interview with Vulture, the actress was once again quizzed about the origins of her beloved character, to which she replied: “We will see in a year. Just sit tight on that question.”

Could Ridley’s hero actually be a descendant of the great Obi-Wan Kenobi? It’s possible. Another prevalent theory is that Rey’s mother is actually Jyn Erso, the hardened Rebel fighter that will soon headline Gareth Edwards’ anthology movie Rogue One. Either that or speculation is way off base and Rey’s parents are relative unknowns and are in no way connected to any of the existing characters. Then again, this is Star Wars we’re talking about.

All will hopefully be revealed when Star Wars: Episode VIII shoots for theaters on December 15, 2017. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is up next, and will reportedly run for 133 minutes (two hours and 13 minutes) when it opens on December 16.
