While fans have been clamoring for a proper Ghostbusters follow up since its 1989 sequel belly flopped into theaters, no one on earth has probably been more vocal about it than star Dan Aykroyd. The SNL alum has been trying to get a Ghostbusters 3 off the ground for decades, a movie that just seemed impossible to make until Jason Reitman announced his involvement earlier this year.
In a brand new interview with Gamespot, detailing the long and troubled production history of a proper Ghostbusters 3, Aykroyd teased a major connection between the upcoming sequel and the 1984 original:
“Jason came up with this idea, which is just so good, everybody got it right away and understood. It will connect, better than anything, to the first movie. That’s about all I can say about it, but the two movies will connect, in a way that hasn’t been done before.”
Admittedly, this is all feels a little too good to be true. Appropriately enough, Jason is the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two entries in the Ghostbusters saga. He’s already teased the use of his father’s catalog of never-before-seen footage in the threequel, but wouldn’t elaborate further.
In fact, almost every detail of the story is being kept under wraps. We know the new movie will focus on Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War) though, and we know Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray will return in their original roles. Whatever’s the correlation between these two sets of characters is still a mystery, but surely it’s the connection Aykroyd’s been hinting at.
Of course, the franchise hit a small snag in 2016 with Paul Feig’s reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. While not a downright terrible movie, it didn’t make the kind of money Sony was hoping for, so it’s honestly a bit shocking that they’re already attempting to revive the series once again.
What do you think of the project, though? Will Ghostbusters 3 live up to the nearly three-decades worth of demand? Head on down to the comments section and share your thoughts.
