Will people please stop talking to Dan Aykroyd? You’re just encouraging him. ‘Twas not so long ago that Mr. Aykroyd announced that Ghostbusters 3, the sequel that is scaring the hell out of everyone for all the wrong reasons, will be shooting by next year. Now Aykroyd has informed Larry King on some important plot details for the next film.
Basically it sounds like that Ghostbusters 3 will be based on particle physics research being done at Columbia University, which in the film will threaten the various planes of our existence and … well, when your existence is being threatened, who ya gonna call?
Aykroyd further confirms that they need to cast four new Ghostbusters to join our now elderly (and rotund and possibly dead) boys from the late-eighties. Those Ghostbusters will also be Columbia students, which makes good sense. Will they change it up and bring along a token woman this time? The sky really is the limit.
The question of Bill Murray persists, as it shall from now until Doomsday – or when Ghostbusters 3 gets off the ground, whichever comes first. Murray has not signed on for anything and continues to express total disinterest in coming on board with the new film. Not that I blame him. Of the original ghost-busting boys, Murray has done the best for himself career-wise. Why return to something that has the potential to be simply embarrassing?
Despite my extreme misgivings about Ghostbusters 3, the plot as Aykroyd describes it does not sound too bad. In fact, it has the potential to be good fun. It all depends on the script, the execution and, of course, the casting of those four new Ghostbusters.
At the end of the day, Ghostbusters 3 might very well get made, even without Murray. I’ll be in the theatre to see it, too. I just hope I don’t come out crying.
