When the news first broke about Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, it seemed every actor imaginable was throwing their hat into the ring for a part in the new Star Wars films. It doesn’t seem that trend will ever come to a halt until everyone has voiced their desire as today, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe said he wouldn’t shy away from joining another franchise, and taking on a role in a galaxy far, far away is something he’d be extremely excited about.
Radcliffe said in an interview that he’d be reluctant to reprise his role as the boy who lived, but he’s very open to the possibility of joining another franchise, and that ‘franchise’ shouldn’t be such a dirty word for the industry. Check out his full quote below.
“Franchise mustn’t become a dirty word. If directors like JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon keep doing what they’re doing, it won’t be. I’d love to be part of one again. Maybe not leading it; a nice supporting role. Star Wars would be awesome. That’d be crazy cool.”
Radcliffe makes a very valid point about franchises. Some actors shy away from getting stuck in a role for too long for fear of being typecast, but he’s living proof that isn’t always the case. He’s been in some very diverse films lately, from The Woman In Black to Kill Your Darlings, and he’s lined up some very interesting roles for the future, such as playing the hunchbacked assistant Igor in an upcoming Frankenstein project. If Whedon and Abrams continue to create franchises of films audiences love, it would be foolish for actors to shy away from multiple films as a character.
In terms of Radcliffe joining Star Wars, I’m certainly not opposed. He’s a talented actor who has the ability to take on a variety of roles. While I’m not sure he’s the one I want leading the new trilogy, I’d definitely be excited to see him in a supporting role or in one of the spin-off films. With that being said, I won’t even begin to speculate on who he would be able to play.
