On the right is Amber Heard as Mera, the red-haired Atlantean daughter of King Nereus and presumed love interest of Arthur, who’s looking ready to take the reigns here.

Aquaman himself has been the subject of a generous amount of new material lately, too, including our first photo of the hero in his classic orange and green costume. Turns out that actor Jason Momoa can pull off that loud color combination quite well.

Better yet, Warner Bros. released a 5-minute trailer for the movie last week, and while the promo did draw some criticism for perhaps giving away a little too much about the feature, it’s clear that all this new footage was enough to get a lot of filmgoers pumped. The trailer even made a believer out of comic book writer Mark Millar, who went from decrying DC’s heroes as un-cinematic to slamming the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Successful conversions like this bode well for the flick, which Warner Bros. head Toby Emmerich has said strikes a perfect balance between “fun and jeopardy, edge and wonder, comedy and tragedy.” A biased source, of course, but attendees to the film’s early test screenings seemed pretty content, too.

We’ll see if Aquaman can live up to the hype – or at least get a better response than the commercially underwhelming Justice League – when the movie hits theaters on December 21st.
