We’ve got a new Superman and Batman on the way, not to mention other A-listers like the Green Lanterns and slightly less integral characters like Swamp Thing and Booster Gold, but so far James Gunn has refrained from promising us any kind of Justice League team-up in the DCU Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters. It looks like he’s making sure his rebooted franchise can walk before it can run, then, which is a smart move. But even so, fans are already discussing how the JLA could be introduced back onto the scene.
As Redditor u/BatmanTold has pitched, what if Gunn held off on a new Justice League movie in favor of doing a Trinity film, building up the friendship between Kal-El, Bruce Wayne, and Wonder Woman, before DC’s big three then joined with the other founding members of the JLA in a later entry in the saga.
On the one hand, some commenters agree with the OP that this would be a neat idea, as it would ensure audiences come to connect to the DCU’s new trinity before we have to deal with a whole team full of heroes vying for our attentions. On the other, those fans with long memories argued that we already essentially got this before in the old DCEU with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and we all know how well that turned out.
Obviously, Gunn’s take on an arguably similar idea would be much different from Snyder’s, likely learning from many of BvS‘ mistakes, but you can see why that outing would have burned folks off the idea of another Trinity movie. The odds are that James Gunn has already worked out exactly how he’s going to introduce the Justice League into the DCU, and we’ll just have to be patient until it’s time for him to unveil the truth.
