The Powers That Be over at 20th Century Fox have purportedly mapped out a four-film arc for Nathan Summers (AKA Cable), beginning with Deadpool 2.
That’s according to Summers himself, who spoke to Empire Magazine (h/t CBM) in anticipation of the sequel’s release next month. It’s already been ushered into the spotlight thanks to this morning’s media dump, which placed the Merc With a Mouth alongside Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead as he tried to approach and presumably placate Julian Dennison’s fire-wielding mutant.
He’ll play a pretty crucial role in Deadpool 2 as well, given Josh Brolin’s Cable has made it his mission to locate (and perhaps kill?) Dennison’s mystery character before he commits a heinous, unspeakable crime. And that’s merely the beginning of Cable’s arc, after Brolin told Empire that a four-film arc is in place.
We think about it in four movie terms. We tried to think of Cable as a full arc, not just in this movie, but in the trajectory of four films. That made it a lot more fun for me.
And though it’s yet to be confirmed, a four-film arc would surely encompass Drew Goddard’s embryonic X-Force movie, which was tentatively announced last year. All of this is still subject to change depending on the outcome of Disney’s impending acquisition of Fox, of course.
On the topic of the Mouse House, Brolin also addressed his return as Thanos in this month’s Avengers: Infinity War, even if he believes his days working within the MCU are numbered.
I don’t like the idea of a franchise, personally. That’s what makes the Thanos thing really great. It’s a finite thing, and I like that.
Look for Deadpool 2 to make a beeline for theaters on May 18th – smack bang in the middle of Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War, Josh Brolin’s other major comic book role of 2018.
