If Deadpool 2 lay dormant during San Diego Comic-Con – ditto for the rest of Fox’s 2018 slate, which includes New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix – then the past fortnight has witnessed David Leitch’s comic sequel explode into life, unveiling our first official peek at not only Zazie Beetz as Domino, but also Josh Brolin’s musclebound Cable and his cute little teddy.
Those high-res snaps, which trickled out via Ryan Reynolds’ personal Twitter feed, have been accompanied by a steady stream of set photos showcasing Domino dropping down from the sky, Cable’s stunt double, and an oversized military vehicle plowing through the streets of Vancouver. Like we said, a busy fortnight.
But amid all the commotion, Reynolds has now shared a frankly adorable picture of a mini Merc posing alongside Josh Brolin’s Nathan Summers. Chances are this is just one very keen fan who paid a visit to the Deadpool 2 set between takes, and left with a souvenir. The Tweet from Reynolds was captioned as so: “Josh Brolin and I love to just hang out and chat between takes. He calls me his lil’ Shake Weight™”.
Production on Deadpool 2 will likely continue through until the end of the summer, so expect plenty more set photos to emerge between now and then. We know that Domino, Cable, and the Merc are all present, which means that it’s only a matter of time before amateur photographers manage to capture all three mutants sharing a scene together. As always, watch this space for more.
Last time the Merc With a Mouth stormed theaters, Deadpool managed to rack up an eye-watering $783 million worldwide thanks to its lasting appeal and lean, irreverent script. If David Leitch and Co. are to emulate that success story, they’ll need to pull out all the stops. But thanks to the Beetz/Brolin double act, we’re quietly confident that Deadpool 2 will be able to deliver the goods on June 1st, 2018.
