It’s rather fitting that the Deadpool 2 marketing campaign is as cheeky and unpredictable as its titular lead.
From Thanksgiving treats to Bob Ross-inspired trailers (“and remember, hugs and drugs”), the Powers That Be have wholeheartedly embraced the Merc’s irreverent style, which, in turn, has allowed Ryan Reynolds to do what he does best: serve up funny and often deadpan tweets to his legions of followers. And the actor’s latest post certainly honored that tradition.
Via Twitter, Reynolds unveiled a striking piece of artwork earlier this week that imagined Deadpool and Cable in the Creation of Adam, Michelangelo’s biblical painting that’s etched into the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. But this is not the Vatican City. And let’s face it: neither Wade Wilson nor Nathan Summers are terribly religious. Instead, the tongue-in-cheek promo is designed to drum up excitement for the second coming, as a fully-costumed Wade reaches out longingly for Cable’s firearm.

Now, on the surface, it’s not a particularly revealing piece of promotional material, but upon closer inspection, it may actually tell us the title of the film. As you surely know, Deadpool 2 isn’t what the sequel will end up being called and though Fox has yet to reveal an official moniker, this poster might have given it away. And that’s because seen in the bottom right hand corner is the phrase ‘The Second Coming.’
Fans have already started speculating that this could actually be the film’s subtitle, and while it may just be a cheeky reference to the religious parody seen here, there are a few reasons to believe that Wade Wilson’s next adventure will actually be called Deadpool: The Second Coming. Chief amongst them being that there’s a Marvel comic book out there called X-Men: Second Coming.
Though the Merc with a Mouth wasn’t too involved in it, the arc did feature Cable quite heavily, not to mention Hope Summers, too, who’s rumored to have a role in David Leitch’s upcoming sequel. As Nerdist explains, Second Coming “brought Hope, the Mutant Messiah, back to the present as a teenager. She had previously been taken to the future by Cable, who raised her as his daughter to prepare her for her destiny.”
Though this should be filed firmly in the speculation cabinet for now, it certainly sounds plausible. Especially since we know Cable’s going to play a pretty big part in the film’s story. One way or another, we should find out pretty soon what Deadpool 2 will end up being called, as the Merc’s next big screen outing will be with us on June 1st.
Until then, though, tell us, do you think The Second Coming could be the subtitle of the pic? Sound off with your thoughts down below!
