The success of Deadpool 2 proves that there’s a lot of life left in the X-Men universe, as the sequel to the 2016 original opens the door for a whole new sub-franchise in the form of X-Force. As you probably know, however, any plans Fox have could be cast aside if that merger with Disney goes ahead, as the rights to the characters would return to Marvel Studios, who would no doubt reboot the lot.
Well, maybe not everyone. Disney CEO Bob Iger has suggested that the Merc might be able to escape the reboot and Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated anti-hero could simply be folded into the MCU as is. Of course, if there’s one character who could survive this franchise-shattering event it’s the fourth wall breaking Deadpool. Given this, do screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick – who’ve penned both of the character’s solo movies so far – have any plans for how DP might fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
One fan asked the duo during a Reddit AMA if they can expect to see the Merc rubbing shoulders with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at some point, and the writers revealed that they were “not sure” about anything to do with the potential move to Disney, as they’ve not yet had any discussions with the likes of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
“We’re not sure. The lawyers won’t let anyone from either side talk to each other yet. We tried to initiate a conversation with Kevin Feige using smoke signals, but the LAFD was called in. Not great.”
Reese and Wernick might not have any official plans for what might happen if Deadpool becomes a Marvel Studios property but that hasn’t stopped them from thinking about which of the Avengers they’d love to pair Wade Wilson up with. They’ve previously said that they’d want to have DP join forces with Captain America, as they think that it would be comedic gold to have two totally different heroes come together – something we wholeheartedly agree with.
