The entire internet went ballistic last month when 20th Century Fox dropped their biggest news of the year: Deadpool is finally getting a spinoff movie. As a character with strong ties to the X-Men throughout the comics – and X-Men Origins: Wolverine – there have been rumblings about whether this new movie would be a part of that same world. A confirmation that the film had a release date for Winter 2016 sparked further curiosity about how exactly the badass Mercenary would fit into the X-Men cinematic canon.
Now, in a recent interview with Comic Book Movie, X-Men: Days Of Future Past scribe Simon Kinberg has finally let the cat out of the bag:
“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”
Does this mean that come 2016 we’ll witness the return of the Deadpool that we’ve previously seen on-screen? The much-loved mouthy mercenary has been in the running for his own movie since 2009. Back then, Ryan Reynolds’ performance stood out as a shining beacon of awesome in the rather-dissatisfying X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it’s expected that he will return for this outing. Kinberg’s comments indicate that Deadpool will be tied into the events of the X-Men universe – but he doesn’t state whether or not it will be that same version.
The other thing to note here is that the matter of Deadpool co-existing with the X-Men isn’t harmonious with the contents of the original script for the flick. In that version, Deadpool exists outside of the X-Men universe and it apparently contains swipes at his appearance in Origins. Now that Kinberg’s assured fans he’s in the same world, there’s likely going to be heavy rewrites. The possibilities for how he’ll be incorporated into the grand narrative of the X-Men movies is one that’ll be debated heavily by fans, but we’re definitely curious to see how they pull all this together.
Deadpool is slated to open February 2016. What do you think of this latest addition to the X-Men universe? Happy that Deadpool’s gonna be hooked in? Sound off below!
