Given that Logan will herald Hugh Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine, fans have been hoping that before the actor hangs up the adamantium claws for good, we’ll get to see him share the screen with Deadpool. Granted, the two characters have appeared together before, in the dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the less said about that film the better. A proper team-up is definitely in order for these two, but unfortunately, it just doesn’t look like it’ll happen
Rumors surfaced a month or so ago that claimed Ryan Reynolds had already filmed a cameo for James Mangold’s Logan. Despite the fact that the tone of Deadpool would clash horribly with Mangold’s movie, the internet still went wild over the possibility of seeing the Merc with a Mouth show up. That is, until the director put paid to the idea, saying that it wasn’t happening.
Just in case you needed more confirmation of that though, the writers behind Deadpool 2 (and the original), Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, have now said the same thing in a recent interview with The Playlist, telling the outlet that there won’t be any cameos occurring as the tones are just too different.
“Yeah, that’s not happening,” Rheese said. “The tones are just too different. I’m not sure exactly where that rumor came from, but Hugh and Ryan are really close and they really do want to work together and they really do want to see these characters come together, so in the long run, that rumor could become true — that they’re in a movie together, but it’s just not ‘Logan.’ And no, not even an end credit scene.”
Is this disappointing to hear? Of course, but it makes perfect sense. Seeing Deadpool and Wolverine together on screen is every fan’s dream come true, but Reynolds’ hero would just feel way too out of place in the more somber and moody Logan. There’s no way to make it work and as much as we’d love to see the two of them in the same film, it shouldn’t happen in Mangold’s upcoming threequel.
That doesn’t mean Jackman can’t cameo in Deadpool 2 though. There’s definitely a way to fit him in there and if he were to show up one final time before retiring from the character for good, fans would no doubt be ecstatic. The chances of it happening are slim, to be sure, but both actors know how much people want to see it and if they can figure out how to make it work without the cameo feeling forced or out of place, we may just get our wish.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. The problem with having Jackman show up again as Wolvie after Logan is that so much of the film’s marketing has centered on this being his last time playing the character that if he were to come back, it’d just look stupid on everyone’s part. Even if it was just for a quick cameo. So, again, we’re not sure how likely a team-up with Deadpool is. That being said, we’d be more than open to it happening and wouldn’t completely rule it out just yet.
