Three years on from the release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and fans are still finding new easter eggs and easily-missed references hidden throughout the movie. Director Zack Snyder himself has even been pointing out a few deeper meanings to the film on social media. Here’s one that a fan managed to spot all by themselves, though.
It turns out the climactic scene of BvS features a clever nod to “The Death of Superman” comic book storyline. This was obviously a big influence on the third act of the movie, as Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel dies in a battle with the Kryptonian monstrosity Doomsday, just as in the source material. In a callback to its inspiration, though, the issue in which Supes met his match is hinted at during a scene.
As Twitter user @AaronSlightly writes: “Found a Death of Superman Easter Egg whilst watching BvS when the president is talking to Calvin. ‘Line 1 – 9375’ January, 1993 was issue #75 of Superman which was his death.” Check out the photo below and see for yourself.
What’s perhaps most interesting about this is that this discovery now means the scene has twice as many easter eggs as we thought. As the Tweet above mentions, the sequence sees officials talking to the President of the United States. DC movie fans may recognize the President’s voice as belonging to Patrick Wilson, who played Dan Dreiberg AKA Nite-Owl in Watchmen, which was again directed by Zack Snyder. Wilson will turn up once more in the DCEU, too, this time in the flesh, in December’s Aquaman.
While BvS adapted “The Death of Superman,” Justice League was (extremely loosely) inspired by the second half of the storyline in which Clark Kent’s resurrected. As per the comic books, a black and silver suit was featured in a deleted scene, which ultimately ended up on the Blu-ray.
