Jurassic Park, Splice and Deep Blue Sea – three films that focus on the nasty, spine-chilling circumstances that tend to arise when human beings mess with DNA and the biological building blocks that make up life itself. To quote the great Ian Malcolm, often times movie scientists are so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.
For Deep Blue Sea 2, that inflated god complex leads to the creation of frenzied, bio-engineered sharks that, through time, begin to turn on their human captors.
That is, in a nutshell, the underlying plot of Darin Scott’s long-in-development sequel, which has been pitched as a loose continuation of Renny Harlin’s cult thriller. And though many believed the underwater world of Deep Blue Sea had been rendered extinct, Syfy and Scott clearly had other plans, and Bloody Disgusting has now uncovered three eerie new photos to prove it.
Meanwhile, here’s a reminder of the sequel’s official synopsis ahead of its Blu-ray launch later this month:
A shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre) is invited to consult on a new, top secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). She believes the project, performed at a remote, sea-based facility, focuses on extracting shark antibodies to help work toward cures for human diseases. However, Dr. Calhoun is shocked to learn that the company is using unpredictable bull sharks as its test subjects, and Durant has bio-engineered a shiver of highly intelligent, super-aggressive bull sharks. When science meddles with the time-tested process of nature and nurture, the outcome can be deadly.
Directed by Darin Scott, Deep Blue Sea 2 will make a beeline for Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD on April 17th (pre-order here). And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…
