It’s no surprise that Hollywood is coming out with yet another remake. And it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s also a remake of a foreign film, since filmmakers seem to be churning those out just as much as they are with American film remakes. This particular one though, could be an interesting remake if done correctly.
Twitch has announced that Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has been offered the lead role in the remake of the 2009 Argentinean film The Secret in Their Eyes. If he accepts the offer, Washington will play Benjamin Esposito, originally played by Ricardo Darin. Billy Ray, director of Shattered Glass and Breach, is set to direct the American version.
Here is the synopsis of The Secret in Their Eyes:
“A retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior – both of which still haunt him decades later.”
The original film won Best Foreign Film at the 2010 Academy Awards and has a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A remake may not be necessary, but, if done correctly, it could be good, especially with Washington in the role.
Washington can next be seen in the Daniel Espinosa action/thriller Safe House, and the Robert Zemeckis film Flight, both due to be released in 2012.
