For fans of mainstream horror, Halloween 2017 is shaping up to be one for the ages.
From New Line’s chilling, two-part adaptation of It to Jigsaw and everything in between, steely moviegoers won’t have to search too far to locate a big-budget thrill ride this Halloween. Outside the realm of cinema though, there’s another, slightly more modest feature arriving that hopes to scare you shitless. Its name? Cult Of Chucky, the latest instalment in the Child’s Play franchise that finds Don Mancini behind the lens.
Pegged for a primetime release in October, Mancini’s horror sequel is poised to unleash the titular Devil Doll once more, and thanks to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, today heralds the release of a new, suitably terrifying image from Cult of Chucky that finds Brad Dourif’s pint-sized demon doing his best impression of a one-armed bandit. And as if that wasn’t enough, Chucky just so happens to be wielding a screwdriver in the other. Is it October 3rd yet?
Casting-wise, Cult of Chucky features Summer H. Howell (Curse of Chucky), Jennifer Tilly (Bride of Chucky), and Alex Vincent, star of the first two Child’s Play movies who spooked viewers by returning in a post-credits sequence in Curse. What surprises lie in store in Cult? We’ll have to wait to find out.
Here’s the official logline that teases all of the nightmarish horrors that await:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.
As this is a direct-to-video release, horror fans can look forward to an extra batch of content launching alongside Cult of Chucky on October 3rd, most notably a behind-the-scenes tour of Alterian, the studio that houses many of the creative geniuses behind Chucky’s puppeteering. Also slated to arrive at the beginning of October is the Chucky: Complete 7-Movie Collection, which you’d best be picking up if you’re a fan of the franchise.
