It’s now been a week since Iron Fist season 2 dropped on Netflix and most of us Marvel fans have already binge-watched the new run. All in all, it was an improvement on the lackluster first season, particularly in terms of wider universe connections. For instance, there’s a pretty neat callback to the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron included, which you may’ve missed.
As was revealed back at Comic-Con, Alice Eve plays Mary Walker in season 2, an assassin suffering from Dissassociative Identity Disorder, who’s the MCU adaptation of classic Daredevil villain Typhoid Mary. Across the ten episodes, we learn that Walker was once a special ops officer stationed in the European nation of Sokovia. If you don’t recognize that name, you haven’t been paying close enough attention.
Sokovia, an original creation for the MCU, debuted in Ultron. As the home of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, the titular homicidal robot also made it his base of operations and the big final battle between the Avengers and his drones took place in the country’s capital city. In order to stop him, though, the heroes had to level the city, causing untold destruction and paving the way for the Sokovia Accords to be set up in Captain America: Civil War.
Due to the unspecified timeline of the Marvel/Netflix shows, we’re not sure if Mary’s time in Sokovia occurred before or after the Ultron incident. The prelude comic for The Avengers sequel established that it was already a war-torn nation before the heroes intervened, though it definitely would’ve become even more so afterwards. So either’s a possibility.
ComicBook.com has put forward the theory, though, that Mary’s imprisonment could have been at the hands of EKO Scorpion, the Sokovian elite squad led by Helmet Zemo. The Civil War villain proved himself to be a vicious man, so Mary’s horrible experiences of torture, abuse and rape would line up with his way of operating.
Iron Fist season 2 left the door open for a bigger role for Mary when the show returns, so it’s likely more of her Sokovian past will be explored, possibly even bringing with it further MCU connections.
