EDM has become a full-blown cultural phenomenon, prevailing in clubs and on the charts, but few great films have been made about the musical genre. Catfish: The Series host Max Joseph is aiming to change that with his upcoming We Are Your Friends, about a young, up-and-coming DJ exploring life and love in Los Angeles while aspiring to mainstream success.
With Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski, Wes Bentley and more in the film, it’s certainly a high-profile project, and we’ve been keeping an eye on it for a while now. Recently, Joseph released an enjoyable behind-the-scenes look at We Are Your Friends, which he promises will be the first of many on-set videos.
Deadline describes the plot of We Are Your Friends as follows:
“It’s set in the worlds of electronic music and the Hollywood nightlife, where an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire.
“All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie. With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he knows he’s destined for.”
Efron has come a long way since his High School Musical days, impressing with his dramatic performance in The Paperboy and striking box office gold in the breakout summer comedy Neighbors. He has the star appeal to anchor a movie like this, and that he’ll be aided by Ratajkowski, one of Hollywood’s current ‘it girls,’ with a role in David Fincher’s Gone Girl this fall as well, and Bentley, a skilled character actor, is cause for excitement.
We Are Your Friends will arrive sometime next year.
