Director Susanne Bier Explains Bird Box’s Twist Ending

Via People, director Susanne Bier has opened up about Netflix sensation Bird Box and, more specifically, its surprising ending.

Though it initially premiered on Netflix before the festive season, the mystery and intrigue generated by Susanne Bier’s Bird Box have spilled over into the new year – so much so, in fact, that Bier has been fielding all sorts of questions relating to Sandra Bullock’s performance, the possibility of a sequel, and those pesky creatures lurking in the dark.

Case in point: while discussing all things Bird Box in an interview with People (h/t Cinema Blend), the filmmaker touched base on the film’s ending, and why she wanted to leave things on a positive note after such a relentless journey, one which evidently pushed viewers to the very edge of their seats.

Said she:

I felt that it needed some real hope. And I thought having someone else survive, and having someone who she met at a point where she was in a kind of rejecting life, and having to meet at that point [where she’s embracing it] — I felt was a really warm and hopeful element to the ending. And it also makes us think, ‘Oh, there are other survivors!’ I think it does infuse the ending with a kind of grander hope than if she had not been there.

Asked about the chances of a sequel, Bier then called for patience, and told Netflix subscribers that now’s the time to enjoy Bird Box for what it is – namely, a carefully crafted streaming sensation – rather than campaigning for a sequel so soon after release.

Via People:

We only just finished [the first one]! It’s funny, I’m kind of reading people asking for a sequel and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey, we really just finished!’ So let’s just enjoy it for now.

Bird Box is still streaming via Netflix, so if you can pluck up the courage, a terrifying, horror-infused treat awaits. Either that, or you could take a punt on the so-called Bird Box challenge – so long as you take the necessary precautions
