Tonight has been a great night for Harry Potter stars. First, Gary Oldman joined Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, then news broke that Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, is nearing a deal to join Frankenstein. Now we have word that Emma Watson is in early talks to star in Disney’s latest live-action fairy tale, Cinderella.
If Watson signs on, she would join Cate Blanchett, who is playing the wicked stepmother, for director Kenneth Branagh. Branagh stepped in to replace the original director, Mark Romanek.
Watson isn’t the first actress that Disney has approached about the role. Previously, Gabriella Wilde, Saoirse Ronan, Imogen Poots, and Alicia Vikander were all in talks to star, but none were able to lock down a deal.
Watson has been extremely busy since completing the Harry Potter franchise. She’s received rave reviews for her wonderful performance in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and she has completed roles in Noah, The Bling Ring, and This Is The End. She’s also signed on to Your Voice In My Head, so adding Cinderella to the mix would mean fans will have no shortage of Watson in the coming years.
In my opinion, the young actress would be an absolutely terrific choice for Cinderella. There’s a reason she’s so active in Hollywood right now, and it isn’t just because she’s beautiful. Her performance as Sam in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower was one of the best of the year, and I honestly thought she had a shot at an Oscar nomination for supporting actress. She first proved her talent in Harry Potter, and since then she has deftly moved far away from being typecast in that role. It won’t be long until Hermoine is a mere blip on her highlight reel.
