Tomorrowland.
Well, that’s just great. In the current grand tradition of making movies based on Disney’s theme park rides, we’ve got a whole movie based on an entire section of Disneyland. It worked for Pirates of the Caribbean, maybe not so well for The Country Bears and The Haunted Mansion. Track record is a bit spotty on this trend, I fear.
The thing is, that’s about all we get concerning what 1952-now-Tomorrowland is actually about. Director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof teased the film just the other day, posting photos of a box labeled ‘1952’. The box contained items like old-timey photographs, a copy of Amazing Stories magazine, and bound file folders that obviously must contain all kinds of exciting revelations. Oh, and a book on aeronautics by military history professor Alex Roland. The only one of those that might perhaps give us a proper clue is the Amazing Stories magazine, which featured the first appearance of Buck Rogers. Is it too much to hope for a Buck Rogers film?
We might also observe that Disney’s imagineering division was founded in 1952 to develop concepts for Disneyland, which opened in 1955. This whole movie might just about Disneyland.
Give the folks over at Disney credit: they’re really going to town on the marketing of this one, releasing just a little bit at a time. So far we know that it’s going to be in 3D, that George Clooney will star and Bird direct, and that the items in that box all have something to do with it. But what? WHAT?
If this is all an elaborate ruse to get us interested in the film, well-done, Disney, but you’d better deliver. Remember Super 8? That worked really well, but because it was a good movie. If you’re going to tease fans and hard-working film bloggers, you’d better have something really awesome behind it all.
It’s going to be awhile before we know the truth, though. Tomorrowland isn’t due to hit theatres until December 19, 2014. So there’s lots more speculation coming, and we’ll be right there, feeling annoyed.
