Slowly but surely, we’re learning more about what to expect from the upcoming Aquaman solo film when it comes to how the major players will appear. I mean, Justice League gave us a good idea of what’s in store for Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard’s Mera’s respective fashions, but it wasn’t until last month that we knew what Nicole Kidman’s Queen Atlanna, Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta looked like.
Fortunately, Entertainment Weekly is still laying some golden eggs, for they’ve now revealed the Fisherman King set to be played by none other than Djimon Hounsou. As you can tell from the image below, he’s looking a bit different in this production because his character is of a separate species entirely.
Joining him to the left are the Fisherman Queen (Natalia Safran) and Princess (Sophia Forrest). And though the picture cuts off at a certain point, note that each have tails like the fella on the right.
If you were wondering why this monarch and his people look incredibly different from other sea dwellers we’ve seen to date, know that producer Peter Safran has an explanation:
“After the fall of Atlantis, some of the kingdoms evolved and some devolved. This is one that evolved. This is a kingdom that’s primarily artistic and cerebral, with poets and philosophers.”
From the look of it, Hounsou is establishing himself as one of the most prolific actors in the superhero genre today. Having already played Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy (a role he’ll reprise in Captain Marvel) and voiced Black Panther on the eponymous animated series, Djimon is also pulling double duty for DC. In addition to this Fisherman King gig, he was recently confirmed as being the Wizard in Shazam! And if you’d like to go back even further, he played Papa Midnite in 2004’s Constantine. Pretty impressive, eh?
Aquaman opens in theaters on December 21st.
