For those who watch Doctor Who, I have some good news. The current incarnation of the time travelling doctor, Matt Smith, has been tapped to star in Ryan Gosling’s upcoming directorial debut, How To Catch a Monster. The news comes to us from Variety, who tell us that the role is still unknown but that it will indeed be the male lead. Co-starring alongside Smith will be Christina Hendricks, who has the central role, and supporting them will be Ben Mendelsohn, Rob Zabrecky and Eva Mendes.
Not much is known about the film just yet but it is said to have elements of fantasy noir, suspense and modern day fairytales. Set against the “surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city,” the film centers on “Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two who is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.”
We can only assume that Smith will not be playing Billy’s son, but aside from that, we have no clue which role he will take. Either way, the actor has made a good career move here in choosing How To Catch A Monster as his first American feature. The film is loaded with potential and although we don’t know much about it just yet, I’m already intrigued. Gosling is surrounding himself with a very strong cast for his first effort behind the camera and for now, I remain hopeful that it will be something truly special.
Smith, despite not being known for much outside of Doctor Who, is a very talented individual and one of the better actors to play the famous doctor. I’m thrilled to see him hopping on board a project like this as it can only mean good things for his career. I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more of him in the coming years and you can bet that this won’t be the last time we see him in an American film.
What do you think of this news? Are you happy to see Matt Smith joining How To Catch A Monster?
