Just last night, word broke that Marvel Studios was courting Selma helmer Ava DuVernay to take the reigns of a Phase Three film (most likely Black Panther or Captain Marvel), and now rumors are spreading that Dope director Rick Famuyiwa could be in the mix as well.
The news comes from former Latino-Review writer Umberto Gonzalez (better known by social media folk as El Mayimbe), who took to Twitter early this morning:
RIDDLE RUMOR: What other DOPE director could be meeting at Marvel for BLACK PANTHER? 🙂

When TheWrap first reported that DuVernay was in talks with Marvel, they noted that the studio was adamant about getting an African-American director to take on Black Panther. While it seemed like we’d get a one-two punch of diversity with DuVernay at the helm, this could mean that she’s actually in line to direct Captain Marvel instead, which makes sense since the studio is said to be looking for a female director to tackle their first solo superheroine project.
Of course, this is all rumor and speculation at this point, so anything could be happening behind the scenes. Regardless, this is good news for superhero fans, as DuVernay and Famuyiwa are excellent choices for these projects. And I’m not just talking about diversity; they’re great directors who could do some wonderful, imaginative things with these larger-than-life characters, and we could really use more auteurs behind these properties.
As always, we’ll keep you appraised as new information about these stories becomes available. In the meantime, let us know what you think about this rumor in the comments below.
Black Panther is slated to hit theaters on July 6th, 2018 and stars Chadwick Boseman.
