After graduating from the HBO series Big Love with roles in YA adaptation Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and horror comedy Stage Fright, Douglas Smith is continuing to rise in Hollywood with news that he’s landed a supporting role in Paramount’s hotly anticipated franchise reboot Terminator: Genesis.
No information yet on who Smith is playing, but the film is currently rolling cameras in New Orleans, so I can’t imagine it’s an especially important part. Regardless, Smith is a talented young actor, and it’s exciting to see his star rise with a role in a tentpole as surely lucrative as Terminator: Genesis.
The movie, directed by Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor, is currently shooting. The script was written by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) with an eye to igniting a new trilogy of Terminator movies for Paramount, so hopefully its story won’t be lacking. Lussier’s involvement is a little odd given his lack of credits, but I’m holding out hope that the studio wouldn’t have sunk so much money into Terminator: Genesis if it wasn’t confident in the screenplay.
In the reboot, Game of Thrones actor Emilia Clarke plays Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) is taking on the role of Kyle Reese, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to reprise his iconic role as one of the titular killer robots hunting them. Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will play a future version of Sarah’s son and resistance fighter John Connor, Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games) plays a crucial new character named Danny Dyson and Lee Byung-Hun (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is undergoing extensive effects work to play a T-1000. As of yet unknown characters will be portrayed by Matt Smith (Doctor Who), J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man), Sandrine Holt (Resident Evil: Retribution) and Michael Gladis (Mad Men).
Terminator: Genesis opens July 1st, 2015.
