One of the many DC movies in development at Warner Bros. is a Nightwing solo film, showcasing Batman’s former sidekick Dick Grayson as he goes at it alone. With the project apparently being fast-tracked into production, we expect the hotly-contested titular role to be cast sooner rather than later and now, one more star has thrown his name into the ring.
Young Irish actor Barry Keoghan has just got his big break as part of the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s war movie epic Dunkirk, but he’s already set his sights on entering the lucrative world of comic book cinema. In an interview with Entertainment.IE, Keoghan talked about how much he wants to play Robin.
“Oh yeah, I wanna play Robin. There are many times when I’ve preached this, you know…. I’ve always said Robin. Everyone wants to play Batman [but] you know there’s something interesting about Robin. He’s young, he’s got these detective skills…”
The interviewer then asked Keoghan if he’s talked to anyone in an official capacity about taking on the role. Intriguingly, the actor hesitates and laughs the question off. Have a look for yourself in the video below (jump forward to the 6:05 mark):
Who knows? The person he’s talked about this to could be Christopher Nolan himself. The director obviously helmed the Dark Knight trilogy for WB back in the day and could certainly put in a good word for Keoghan if asked.
If Keoghan does seriously want the role of Dick Grayson though, he should be prepared to match up to some strict requirements. Nightwing director Chris McKay recently took to Twitter to talk about what the actor he casts as Grayson will have to do. Notably, he said he wants “full commitment” and someone who can put up with the “gruelling” filming schedule that will mix “gymnastics, martial arts and stunts.”
Nightwing doesn’t currently have a release date, but some new info on it could trickle out at this weekend’s Warner Bros. panel at San Diego Comic-Con. As always, watch this space for more.
