Despite spending almost 12 years under contract as the DCU’s canonical Superman, Henry Cavill only made four appearances in total under the cape, or five if you include Zack Snyder’s Justice League as a separate entity.

His final outing was supposed to mark the beginning of a brand new era, with Dwayne Johnson spending years convincing the top brass that bringing him back for the post-credits of Black Adam to set up a massive showdown opposite the Man in Black was a risk worth taking. Of course, it soon became clear that it wasn’t, and both of them ended up being cast out of the franchise.

Cavill did get another shot at redemption by way of a guest spot in The Flash, only for his appearance to be left on the cutting room floor. However, director Andy Muschietti just dropped the bombshell that there is a Clark Kent in the movie, but it happens to be in the jaw-dropping, game-changing, and earth-shattering form of Nicolas Cage.

As fantastic as it’s going to be to see the lifelong fan of the character finally get his live-action opportunity more than a quarter of a century on from Tim Burton’s abandoned Superman Lives, it’s another kick in the teeth for Cavill and his legacy. He filmed footage for The Flash, but it was jettisoned in favor of blatant fan-baiting that’s sure to generate a reaction in theaters around the world, but won’t end up having any sort of impact beyond that.
