Edge Of Tomorrow 2, otherwise known as Live Die Repeat and Repeat, is likely to be Doug Liman’s next project.
While out promoting his YouTube series Impulse, the director revealed that, barring some unforeseen change in circumstances, Edge of Tomorrow 2 will enter production sooner rather than later, as any previous scheduling issues have since been resolved.
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are also locked in for the sequel – hence the original issues with scheduling, given Cruise and Blunt are two of the biggest stars in the business – while Liman has already teased that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is actually a prequel masquerading as a sequel.
Expect Blunt’s Sergeant Rita Vrataski (AKA the Angel of Verdun) to take center stage, then, as Doug Liman notes that the sequel’s script has now taken priority.
We’re just working on the script… [We’re no longer working on scheduling issues], now it’s down to we have a window where we could go do it, and we’re frantically working on the script. It’s one of those movies that we’ll only go make if we love the script. It’s not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don’t really care if it’s good or not.
He continued:
If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be. She doesn’t need this movie, he doesn’t need this movie, and I don’t need it. We’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script.
With Tom Cruise still filming Mission: Impossible 6 and Emily Blunt now in post-production on Mary Poppins Returns, it’ll likely be another two-to-three months before Edge of Tomorrow 2 settles on a firm start date. A late 2019 release certainly isn’t out of the question, but it remains to be seen whether the far-future war against the Mimics still has the same box office draw.
