Marvel is notorious for making everyone involved in its productions sign NDAs to keep their mouths shut. That being said, some actors have been known for letting their lips a little loose and spoiling the film, yes, we are looking at you Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo! But one Avenger speaks out about the time she also ruined a plot point, and how she escaped Marvel execs wrath.
Elizabeth Olsen, or Wanda Maximoff a.k.a The Scarlet Witch as she is known in the MCU, once spoiled an Avengers: Infinity War plot point in plain sight and somehow she got away with it. Perhaps no one over at Marvel Studios wanted to be on the receiving end of the witch’s anger. The slip-up occurred when she was participating in a sketch with Josh Horowitz and Aubrey Plaza back in 2017.
In the sketch, Olsen basically revealed the ending of Infinity War, saying (as part of the sketch) “Thanos is like ‘Give me the Infinity Gauntlet!’ and Scarlet Witch is like ‘I don’t think so!’,” when Horowitz asked jokingly (again, as part of the written sketch) “woah, woah, woah, tell me you did not just ruin the ending of Infinity War?” the response that was written, that was delivered by Olsen, was eerily close to the truth, “No. Because everybody dies… I thought everyone knew that.”
In a more recent conversation with Horowitz on his podcast, Happy Sad Confused, the host looked back at this sketch and asked Olsen if she was aware she had actually spoiled the ending, saying “I wrote that line for you, and you didn’t seem to bat an eye. I’m curious, can you recall any hesitation? Like, ‘Oh this is going to get me into deep s***, I’m ruining the end of this movie essentially a year before it comes out’.”
The actress simply responded, laughing,
“No, I think I thought like, oh, people aren’t going to think this is the ending because I am saying it in a sketch. I don’t know what’s it called when you get them off your trail? That’s what I felt like. I think that maybe that was the thought I had.”
Though she admits that she may have given herself too much credit and perhaps she didn’t really think about it at all.
Thankfully, it worked out for her and no one latched on to this spoiler at all, possibly because, as she said, it was said as a joke in a sketch. Well, there are no snipers coming to take her down so far, despite admitting that she has “a feeling [she’s] ruined multiple things many times,” she has yet to be reprimanded. The next big spoiler she could tell us is whether or not she survived at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though we have a feeling she will be a lot more tight-lipped on that one.
