While we’ve been repeatedly assured that every Marvel character that has already been introduced will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, we have yet to hear confirmation about the much anticipated Captain Marvel – due to be played by Brie Larson in the MCU’s first female-led movie.
Though her casting was announced a full year ago, the popular comic book hero has yet to make her big screen debut. That could change though with the upcoming Avengers flick, as evidence is mounting that she might get a Spider-Man/Black Panther style introduction, before her even bigger moment in the spotlight in her own solo film.
Firstly, there was an Instagram post by Ryan Fleck, who will be co-directing the Captain Marvel movie with Anna Boden. While it’s been reported that filming on the character’s standalone effort is not due to begin until at least January 2018, Fleck posted a picture of an apparent Air Force installation, thanking the troops for some undisclosed assistance.
Then, there was a casting call, issued for a project titled Mary Lou, which is reported to be the production name of Avengers: Infinity War. The call asks for performers to fill roles of military personnel.
“***FEATURE FILM***MARY LOU*** **Working August 28** **Fitting: week of August 14th **Filming location TBD (Atlanta area or Fayetteville) New Faces Only! Rate: $68/8
Military Officers: Looking for men who appear to be 30’s-early 50’s, in good physical shape, to portray officers of various rankings. Must have short hair or be willing to get a military haircut. NO Facial Hair! Military experience is preferred, but not mandatory. Filming will be Monday 8/28 with a mandatory fitting the week of August 14th- must be available for both!”
The US Air Force is an integral part of the story of Carol Danvers – also known as Captain Marvel – in her pre-superhero life, so the combination of these two snippets of information, occurring so closely together and after principal photography on Avengers: Infinity War has supposedly wrapped, could suggest that additional footage is being shot that would include Danvers in her military situation.
This would echo the way in which both Black Panther and Spider-Man were introduced during Captain America: Civil War, ahead of their own solo movies, Black Panther, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. By introducing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in some way during Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, her own solo film is then set up, with it being due for release before the fourth Avengers movie, which will be with us in May of 2019. Presumably, she would then play a larger role in that film with a view to being a core member of the Avengers for Phase Four, which begins with Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.
One way or another, all will be revealed when Avengers: Infinity War arrives in cinemas on May 4th, 2018.
