For years now, Ewan McGregor has been asked about reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a future Star Wars movie. He did briefly lend his voice to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there’s still been no word from Disney or Lucasfilm about the fan-favourite character receiving his own spinoff – despite a huge demand from fans for such a thing to happen.
You’d think if the team that stole the Death Star plans and Han Solo could get their own spinoff, then Obi-Wan would be high up on the studio’s list of priorities, but that’s not been the case thus far, something which is evident from the fact that Boba Fett is most likely getting the spotlight next. However, there have been little hints and clues over the years pointing towards a Kenobi spinoff somewhere down the road and it seems that even despite the uncertainty about the project, McGregor remains fully committed.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor once again said he would “be happy to do” an Obi-Wan led film, showing that his stance hasn’t changed and his interest is still there. The Fargo star did, however, note that he’s not desperate for work, but would still love to reprise the role if the opportunity presented itself.
The question now is when and if it’s going to happen. We don’t know what Lucasfilm’s plans are beyond Star Wars Episode IX and how many more spinoffs they currently have in the works, so Obi-Wan’s movie (if it really is going to happen) could still be years away. Hopefully not, though, as Star Wars fans are understandably desperate to see it become a reality and I think we can all agree that the iconic character would be a much better choice for a spinoff than Boba Fett, right?
