When you are asked to play Pinhead, what is your initial reaction? Did you have a ton of doubts and fear, or were you pretty confident taking on the role?
Paul: Oh, boy. Well, when I was first asked to do it, of course I was excited. I was over the moon about it. I was definitely scared though. I once did a theatrical role where I played evil incarnate as Mr. Burns, so I knew what to do in that regard. It’s in me to play that type of character, and I was jumping up and down with joy when I received the opportunity.
What did you want to bring to the character to make unique and a little of you?
Paul: Suffering. I wanted to bring the weight of suffering. He loves the suffering, but he also has suffering. I wanted to give the role a different vulnerability.
He certainly has a more Shakespearean quality compared to other villains in horror.
Paul: Yes! He absolutely does.
So how did you feel when you first saw yourself as the character that’s been iconic for decades?
Paul: I really didn’t have a chance to reflect, but I do remember the first time I stepped on set and heard audible gasps from the crew. That’s when I knew that this was going to work. I felt confident enough at that point to play the role. I felt like I was him, that I was the Hell Priest.
And I think you did a hell of a job. No pun intended. And welcome to the Hellraiser family.
Paul: Thank you so much, that means a lot.
