Back in 2010, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell rejuvenated the haunted house sub-genre of horror with their eerily spooky smash-hit Insidious, providing a breath of fresh air into an otherwise stale genre. Creepy children, hateful demons, a new purgatory-like limbo called “The Further,” – most horror fans had a blast with the scares and screams.
Fast forward to 2013, and both Wan and Whannell have returned to their now widely popular property, going into sequel territory with Insidious: Chapter 2. Their story must have been pretty solid, because they managed to get the entire cast to return, including some familiar faces we thought we’d seen the last of. Unlike some sequels though, our new story picks up directly where Insidious left off, with the rescue of Dalton and the possible loss of Josh.
Considering how much of a fan I was of Insidious, it was a pleasure to be able to sit down with the cast and crew of Insidious: Chapter 2 and discuss their new horror film, even if James Wan unfortunately wasn’t in attendance.
Everyone else made it out for the New York press day though, as I had the privilege of talking to Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Leigh Whannell, and producer Jason Blum. It was an absolute blast chatting horror with these now seasoned veterans, whether it was asking Leigh about the current state of the genre, or asking Rose if she was ever intimated by Patrick’s character, among many other topics. Oh yeah, and I got to see the “I-Scream” truck parked outside, waiting to give passer-bys a creepy treat. I scream, you scream – trust me, we’ll all be screaming during Insidious: Chapter 2!
