Scene 2: The Grandmaster Faces His Subjects
As seems to be the new status quo for MCU post-credits scenes – after Stan Lee trying to hitch a ride with the Watchers in Guardians Vol. 2 and Captain America’s fourth-wall breaking cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming – the final sequence of Thor: Ragnarok is an extra bit of comedy to leave the audience smiling. Either that, or Marvel is deliberately trolling the fans who wait the whole ten minutes until the end of the credits.
The scene jumps back to Sakaar, catching up with the Grandmaster after the revolution that ousted him from power earlier in the movie. We’ll let the one and only Jeff Goldblum take it from here, as he explained what the second post-credits sequence contains while chatting with Radio Times:
“If you stay ‘til the very end, the end credits, you see me do a bit of improvised, Taika Waititi-inspired and directed, bit of improvisation. It looks like my ship has gone down, and I’m surrounded by the rebels. And it’s me against all of them – but I’m the Grandmaster. I’m immortal. You can’t kill me, you can’t even hurt me. I can go like this – mmmmmmmm – and do away with them, and then I can resurrect them if I want. So whatever I’m going on about [in the scene] is just for my own amusement.”
It’s a fun little scene and an extra chance to see Goldblum roll with some hilarious improv. It doesn’t exactly offer many clues to the future, though, apart from leaving us with the question of whether we’ll see the Grandmaster again. While we haven’t heard anything about a further appearance for the character, we do learn in Ragnarok that he’s thousands of years old, plus it’s been mentioned before that he’s the brother of the Collector, so there is more to explore with the Grandmaster if Goldblum fancies coming back.
