The Star Wars universe is on a seemingly unstoppable roll at the moment, and that looks set to continue well into the future. After the smashing success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and with a Han Solo prequel now in development, Lucasfilm has already begun making plans for their next spinoff, one which will revolve around none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct and from what we understand, the project is still without a script and in the very, very early stages of development. As such, it’s unclear if Ewan McGregor will pick up the lightsaber for this Star Wars offshoot, though given how keen the Scot has been in the past, we’re inclined to believe he’ll sign on without a second’s hesitation.
Because after six appearances across Disney and Lucasfilm’s rebooted Skywalker saga, Obi-Wan Kenobi has become a bona fide fan-favorite among the Star Wars community. Originally portrayed by the late, great Alec Guinness across episodes IV, V, and VI, Ewan McGregor donned those iconic Jedi robes all throughout the prequel saga, and was arguably one of the few highlights to be gleaned from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
While we’ll have to wait a while longer before we learn if the actor will return to the role or not, video editor Alex Luthor has today delivered another one of his fantastic fan-made trailers and this time, he’s placed his focus on the spinoff, putting McGregor back in Obi-Wan’s shoes for what’s truly a fantastic watch.
Pretty awesome, right? Luthor uses footage from several Star Wars films here as well as a recent movie McGregor did called Last Days in the Desert. It all makes for a pretty convincing and compelling trailer and as you can see, he’s set the film in between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which makes sense. Of course, we don’t know just yet when exactly the spinoff will take place, but what Luthor’s presented here certainly works.
With it still being very, very early days for the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff, don’t expect to learn more about it anytime soon. Thankfully though, we’ve got much to look forward to in the near future, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi getting ready to touch down in theatres on December 15th. And if that’s not soon enough for you, then there’s also that next trailer to start getting excited about. Look for it to land on Monday.
