Though details remain vague on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, one user on Reddit has drawn on the franchise’s promotional history to estimate when all the major reveals for next year’s trilogy-closer will be coming our way, from the official title, to the unveiling of the soundtrack.
The Redditor has even assigned percentage scores to each of their predictions to mark their likelihood. For example, this user’s 65% sure that the title will be dropping as soon as November 1st of this year. While this would place the reveal well over a year before the actual release date, there’s good reason for believing it could be this early. Indeed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had its name announced on November 4th, 2014, though admittedly, The Last Jedi didn’t reach this promotional landmark until January 23rd on the year of its release.
The user’s reason for guessing the exact date of November 1st with 65% certainly, however, is pretty dubious. It’s argued that since this day would coincide with the sixth anniversary of Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, it would be the perfect time for such an announcement. The problem is, even if you ignore the fact that this deal actually happened in late October, you’d still be left with the question of why Disney didn’t drop the Force Awakens title on November 1st, 2014, nor The Last Jedi title on November 1st, 2016. Anniversaries do still happen every year, don’t they?
Beyond this, the post suggests a teaser release as soon as November 23rd – going against the previously rumored date of February 3rd – and a first proper trailer on April 12th. You can read the full list of predictions on the Reddit post, but it’s clear that some are more reasonable than others.
While this is all fairly unscientific, so long as the team behind Star Wars: Episode IX are remaining tight-lipped on such matters, speculation and rumor might be the best we’ve got to go on. That being said, one date we can predict with near certainty is that the film will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2019.
