In case you need another reminder, quite a lot of people die in Avengers: Infinity War – so many, in fact, that you may have even struggled to keep track of which of your favorite superheroes bit the dust in the final minutes of this apocalyptic blockbuster. But one major figure who was privileged to have an emotional death scene all to herself is Gamora of Guardians of the Galaxy fame.
The orphan alien’s story has been a pretty tragic one so far in terms of both her violent past and her eventual fate. But a new theory on Reddit seeks to up the emotional stakes even further with the suggestion that not only has Gamora long known of the role she might play in Thanos’ plan, but that her actions have consistently shown a willingness to die rather than help the Mad Titan to find the Soul Stone.
User bluecoloredlenses starts off alluding to Gamora’s knowledge of the location of the Stone, along with the seeming willingness of Zoe Saldana’s character to kill herself rather than let Thanos get his big purple hands on this information.
“We know from A3 it was always in the back of her mind that should Thanos ever find her she’d need to end her own life. I’m positing she has been ready to kill herself any time she is near capture because she knows she is the key to his plan.”
From here, bluecoloredlenses looks at each of the character’s three films and assesses how this knowledge may have inspired some risky behavior.
“GotG1 she has a knife to her throat in the prison and has done zero to fight back. Since then we have seen she is a truly elite fighter and in retrospect could have possibly beaten them all back, but doesn’t so much as even try. Before then she had a plan with the power orb (as is said on screen), but now she just accepts death. I think she does this because she’s worried Thanos could show up at the prison and take her.
GotG2 she says, ‘It is only one click but we have to go through that quantum asteroid field’ – either she is a complete idiot or they have vastly inferior tracking on their ship relative to the Sovereigns who easily go around it (who also weren’t any faster in the asteroid field). If she gets caught by the Sovereign she knows Thanos might grab her, so goes for the riskier move with higher pay off full well knowing they all might die.
A3 they’re dividing up in to groups with Thor. For whatever reason she doesn’t go with Thor, Groot, and Trash Panda to the location that is expected to not have Thanos. She does this because she has made sure Peter has accepted the idea of killing her should things goes sideways; on the other side if she goes with Thor’s team and happen to run in to Thanos there is no one to kill her.”
Though this theory mostly comes across as an attempt to rationalize what may well have been nothing more than a few minor oversights in these three scripts, it certainly suggests some intriguingly dark undercurrents to the character’s scenes in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Ultimately, Gamora would play a more central role in Thanos’ acquisition of the Soul Stone than even she anticipated, but it probably won’t be the last we see of the former assassin. The green Guardian will likely be making an appearance in Avengers 4 when it hits on May 3rd, 2019, and is even said to play a major role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which hits cinemas in 2020. How exactly she’ll return to the land of the living is unknown at the moment, but if you’ve got any ideas of your own feel free to share them below.
