Michael Haneke is regarded by many as one of the greatest directors currently working in cinema. He’s created a wide variety of acclaimed and award-winning films including Cache, Funny Games and the 2009 Palme d’Or winning film The White Ribbon. Now, he’s back with his latest film titled Amour, which is set to hit this year’s Cannes film festival. In hopes of heightening the anticipation for it, released today are the first photos and French language trailer for the film.
Amour is Haneke’s first project since winning the Palme d’Or in 2009 and many pick the director as a hot favourite to do it again with this family driven drama.
One of the reasons for the high expectations is that this will be Haneke’s third collaboration with the fantastic Isabelle Huppert, following Time of the Wolf and The Piano Teacher, which won Huppert the Best Actress award in Cannes and is one of my absolute favorite performances.
Amour, which translates into love in English, follows “Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter (Isabelle Huppert), who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack. The couple’s bond of love is severely tested.”
Though the trailer doesn’t offer any subtitles yet, you can absolutely feel the drama of the film as well as some of the obscure style Haneke is known for.
Amour will be released by Sony Picture Classics in the U.S. later this year.
