Although we could argue that Lionsgate exhausted moviegoers with the initial run of the Saw series by releasing seven films in quick succession, it’s undeniable that it became one of the most lucrative horror franchises of all-time. That said, it shouldn’t surprise any of us that they’re taking a second stab at it with Jigsaw, the recently confirmed title of the relaunch.
Now, we can probably all agree that waiting for some significant details regarding the plot has been possibly even more painful than finding yourself on the business end of a reverse bear trap, but the synopsis does provide some hints:
Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?
Considering that this movie was once titled Saw: Legacy, and that neither Costas Mandylor nor Cary Elwes will be reprising their respective roles, we can only conclude that a new character is following in the footsteps of John Kramer, although Tobin Bell is confirmed to be returning in some capacity.
Given that, we only ask that whomever may be behind the new round of slayings not be yet another “apprentice” of Kramer’s because, let’s be honest, that schtick is getting old. Rather, we expect a copycat or possibly someone of significance to him. So, when Charlie Clouser’s music gets cued in the closing minutes, the twist sure as hell better be worth it.
The first poster, which can be viewed below, further hints at a copycat with the tagline of “Become Jigsaw,” though it remains certain that we’ll be scratching our heads up until the theatrical release on October 27.
