Pixar fans have been waiting a whopping 14 years for Brad Bird’s beloved animated superhero movie from 2004 to get a sequel and now, it’s finally just around the corner in the form of Incredibles 2, which sees the return of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and their super-powered brood. The question is, though, will it be able to live up to all the hype and measure up to the original?
With the movie having premiered last night in Los Angeles, initial reactions to the sequel are now in and, thank Frozone, they’re overwhelmingly positive. Not everyone’s totally in love with it, but the majority of critics seem to dig what Pixar’s cooked up here.

#Incredibles2 is such a friggin delight! Family dynamic is brilliant yet again but WOW is Jack Jack a scene stealer. And that score! More A+ work from Michael Giacchino that I’m gonna need to own.

Captured the essence of the original film but way more advancements (because time & technology). It was so fun. I had a great time watching it. Jack Jack is the best part. You will love it. #TheIncredibles2 pic.twitter.com/rOruxuAILa

So happy to report @BradBirdA113 delivered a fantastic sequel to 'The Incredibles'. Absolutely loved #Incredibles2. And @m_giacchino score is, as always, awesome. Can't wait to see it again. pic.twitter.com/bPrU6HHicM

The Incredibles 2 is a serviceable sequel. It takes a while to get going but has good messages even if some of them are a bit heavy handed. The second act is definitely stronger than the first. I will say that Jack Jack steals the show but that was to be expected. #Incredibles2 pic.twitter.com/8gB1nCCbAo

#incredibles2 is a serviceable sequel, a fun adventure but not on the same level of the original. Jack Jack & Edna steal the show, (please tell me they are making a short film with Edna babysitting Jack Jack). Fantastic production design, another great score by @m_giacchino.

So, what can we gather about Incredibles 2 from these reactions? Well, apparently it’ll have “great action sequences” as well as a “family dynamic [that] is brilliant” which allows for some “strong character development.” That said, even if there’s lots for the Parr family to do, we can expect the side characters to steal the show. Most of these Tweets praise baby Jack-Jack as the highlight of the film, calling him “hilarious” and “a scene-stealer.” The same can be said for Edna Mode, the diminutive fashion designer voiced by director Brad Bird himself.
All of this comes as a huge relief for those looking forward to the movie. Pixar is usually reliable at delivering belated sequels that live up to the classic originals – see: Toy Story 3 and Finding Dory for more examples – so it’s good to know they’ve done it again. Hopefully, the full reviews for Incredibles 2 will be just as glowing when they arrive next week ahead of the film’s June 15th release.
