Horror fans at CinemaCon got there first look at the upcoming horror thriller The Boogeyman, and suffice to say they’re not disappointed. 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps released recently released the trailer for the adapted Stephen King story, and while it looked pretty scary, you never can tell from previews.
Reviews from people in the mix, however, are a little easier to believe. Before we get into that, let’s go over the story. It follows a high schooler named Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer, who are trying to deal with the death of their mother.
Their father isn’t much help even though he’s a therapist, as he’s trying to deal with his own grief about the whole thing. A patient shows up at the family home and leaves behind a creature that feeds on family suffering. Spooky! It stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair (the standout from Obi-Wan Kenobi) and others.
Germain Lussier, a journalist for Gizmodo, said the movie “freaking rules.” He called Blair’s performance “excellent.”
Filmmaker Matt Ramos said “it deserves to be seen on the big screen.”
Journalist Daniel Howat called it a “slow-burn sort of horror movie” with a lot of “big scares.”
Screenrant’s Rob Keyes said it was an “easy recommendation for horror fans” with “big jump scares that kill with big sound.” The cast, he said, is “AMAZING.”
Finally we have a review from Demetri Panos the Hollywood Critics Association. Panos called it a “efficient” and “effective” horror movie with “good direction, sound & atmosphere.” The end of the movie is a “sweaty palms edge of your set thriller.”
Pretty good reviews. Especially for a King project, which can be either hit or miss. We won’t know how good it is for sure until it’s released in theaters on June 2. Check out the trailer below.
