Last night in LA, a handful of lucky critics got to attend the junket screening for Star Trek Beyond, and while full reviews are still under embargo, a handful of reactions are starting to pour out over social media. For the most part, it seems like everyone enjoyed the film, with the general consensus being that while it’s not perfect, it’s still a ton of fun.
You could argue that of course these critics will be praising Justin Lin’s entry into the franchise, as if you’re going to be attending the junket for a movie, it wouldn’t be in good taste to bash it over Twitter. And while that is somewhat true, we tend to trust a lot of these people who’ve Tweeted and it’s certainly exciting to see their enthusiasm for the new Star Trek.
There seems to be a lot of praise going towards the film’s action here, which is no surprise given Lin’s experience in the Fast & Furious franchise, and almost everyone agrees that it’s an absolute blast from start to finish, with the popular opinion being that it’s way better than Into Darkness. Overall, the reactions are tremendously positive and we can’t wait to see the film for ourselves when it arrives next week.
Star Trek Beyond zooms into theatres on July 22nd and for an idea of what to expect, you can check out all of the Tweets below.
Was so happy watching Star Trek Beyond. Love this cast. Movie isn’t perfect but it’s funny, filled with great action, and isn’t on Earth!

Bones has the best line of the movie. You’ll know it as soon as you hear it!

STAR TREK BEYOND does something magical: has big, bold action but puts these characters in, basically, a TOS episode. For me it was a dream.
— Jordan Hoffman (@jhoffman) July 14, 2016
Actually, I can say that #StarTrekBeyond is terrific. Funny, exciting and touching.

STAR TREK BEYOND is very entertaining, surprisingly earnest, occasionally dopey (but in a good way). I think Trek fans will really dig it.
— Bilge Ebiri (@BilgeEbiri) July 14, 2016
It’s also, amazingly enough, very much a Justin Lin film.

STAR TREK BEYOND: slick, self-contained & has the best music cue of any blockbuster this yr. by 2016 standards, it’s the sistine chapel. [C]

#StarTrekBeyond is a lot of fun. Leagues better than Into Darkness. I don’t like it quite as much as 2009 though.
— Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) July 14, 2016
Also, great and subtle tributes to both Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy. #StarTrekBeyond
— Alex Welch (@AlexRWelch) July 14, 2016
I’ll also say that Chris Pine is better as Kirk in #StarTrekBeyond than he’s ever been before.

Just saw #StarTrekBeyond, and it’s infinitely better than Star Trek Into Darkness. One of the most entertaining Trek films.

Two #StarTrekBeyond dedications appear in the closing credits:
“In Loving Memory of Leonard Nimoy”
“For Anton”

#StarTrekBeyond feels like a TOS episode in a way that gives this new Trekverse a really long future. Fun, pretty dark, lots of fan moments

Just saw Star Trek Beyond. I am allowed to say I really, really enjoyed it. Way better than Into Darkness & closest to spirit of TOS.

Had a lot of fun with Star Trek Beyond! Simple McGuffin story, but it has great energy, character utilization, and big blockbuster moments.

#StarTrekBeyond is what the Trekkies have been waiting for from the three movies. This was great @StarTrekMovie.
— Laura S (@lsirikul) July 14, 2016
Star Trek Beyond is a well made scifi adventure. It just isn’t Star Trek. It’s a pretty good Mass Effect movie, though, if you want that.
— Jeff Cannata (@jeffcannata) July 14, 2016
Simon Pegg’s co-writing on @StarTrek Beyond balances humor & action which makes up for a few big hiccups in an otherwise entertaining flick

No idea what the hardcore will think, but I reeeeeally enjoyed STAR TREK BEYOND. This should have been the sequel to ’09.

Big sigh of relief: STAR TREK BEYOND is a blast. Easily the best of the new series.

STAR TREK BEYOND is dedicated to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. It’s brief and moving.

Any TOS fan is going to love #StarTrekBeyond. The most beautiful Trek movie & the closest to the original series. A true space adventure!

#StarTrekBeyond was great fun at warp speed. Still lacking #Roddenberry-an moral dilemmas, but a welcome course correction for the franchise
— Scott Huver (@thehuve) July 14, 2016
Some of #StarTrekBeyond‘s best moments are Sofia Boutella moments. Great addition, kickass character, hope she comes back for more Trek
— jen yamato (@jenyamato) July 14, 2016
Star Trek Beyond overcomes its villain problem with the cast, the set pieces, and a surprising amount of heart. Most optimistic of the three.
— Jack Giroux (@JackGi) July 14, 2016
Star Trek Beyond’s character moments are its strongest quality. The crew’s banter and conversations are as fun as the action.

If anyone spoils any of STAR TREK BEYOND for you, unfollow them. Go in as cold as you can.
