Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.
Not being content to rest on their laurels, the fine folks who put together DC’s wonderful animated movies are back at it with Batman vs. Two Face, a followup that may very well surpass its predecessor. Or at least, that’s that impression the first trailer is giving us. Sure, there’s the undeniable appeal that comes with casting William Shatner as Two-Face himself, but seeing is certainly believing.
Speaking of which, we find it only fitting that this sequel add generously to the TV show’s legacy by introducing villains that either weren’t seen during the initial three-season run, or have been developed in the decades that follow. Actually, the Batman ’66 comics that have been published in recent years did this as well, but those were somewhat of a different beast.
Upon viewing the footage provided, it becomes quite apparent that we may be in for a more serious adventure than we’re used to seeing from West and company. Yes, we’re pretty sure the brand of comedy displayed by the Bright Knight you’ve grown used to seeing will be present, but the tragedy that is the origin of Two-Face is in no way ignored. That said, it’s cool to hear Shatner’s voice as being almost unrecognizable as he immersed himself in the character.
Batman vs. Two-Face has been reported to arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on October 17. As always, watch this space for more.
